Paris is a huge place and there are roads, lanes and arterial streets, which might look confusing to a stranger or a traveler who is visiting the French capital for the first time. But this beautiful capital is quite well organized and has been divided into 20 different districts from 1 to 20 also known as arrondissement. One such district is the 8th district or the 8th arrondissement.
The 8th district is one of the largest districts and a part of it lies on the right banks of the River Siene. The name of the 8th district of Paris is Elysee and has a total area of 3.881 square km. The population of this district based on July 2005 estimate is 38,700 people with the population density being 9,972 people per square km.
The 8th district is situated close to the Opera and is recognized as one of the important business centers of Paris. Some of the places to see in this district include the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées, and Place de la Concorde. The district also has the French Presidential residence called the Élysée. The best place to start a tour of the 8th district is from Champs-Elysées, which begins from the Etoile Plaza or Arc de Triomphe and will take you all the way to the Place de la Concorde, which is a famous historical place. This is where Louis XVI lost his head during the 1793 Revolution. Some of the other interesting places that you can see in this district include the Parc Monceau and the Madeleine Church. There are several avenues for shopping in the 8th district and some of the places that might interest you include Rue de Rome and Jacquemart-André Museum along with Petit Palais, the Grand and the Musée de la Découverte, which is a science museum.
The 8th arrondissement falls under the region of Île-de-France and had the highest population is 1891 with 107,485 people.
